Neuschwanstein tours from Munich: five types
Most visitors reach Neuschwanstein from Munich, and the castle is a long day trip. There are five common ways to do it with a guide or an organiser: a coach tour with admission, a coach tour without admission, a combined tour with Linderhof, a guided trip by regional train and a private tour. This page names no operators and no tour prices. Prices vary too much to print, and the live offers are listed in the tour block below.
One rule applies to all of them. Even with a booked tour you need a ticket with a fixed entry time for the castle. The admission, the entry time and the shuttle bus or carriage up the hill are usually not included in the tour price automatically. Read the description for the words "admission included".

Types of tours compared
What each type is good for and what to check. Durations are typical values from operator descriptions.
| Type | How you travel | Castle admission | Typical length | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coach tour with admission | Coach from Munich with a guide | Included, with a fixed entry time | 8 to 9.5 hours | First visit, no wish to deal with tickets |
| Coach tour without admission | Coach from Munich | Paid separately, often to the guide on site | 8 to 9.5 hours | Visitors with a pass or a ticket already booked |
| Combined tour with Linderhof | Coach from Munich | Check the description, Linderhof may be separate | 10 to 10.5 hours | Visitors who want two Ludwig palaces in one day |
| Guided trip by regional train | Regional train from Munich, with a guide | Check the description | Depends on the timetable | Visitors who prefer the train and want company |
| Private tour | Car or minibus with a driver or guide | Check the description | Flexible | Families, small groups, special needs |
A simple rule: if you sleep in Munich and want the least planning, a coach tour with admission is the easy answer. If you already hold a ticket or a pass, you may need only the transport. If you want two palaces in one day, the combined tour with Linderhof saves the connection, which is difficult by public transport.

Coach or train?
The two most common ways to travel with a group.
Coach: fewer variables
The coach takes about two hours each way, which matches the ADAC estimate of 1 hour 43 minutes by car as a rough guide. You are not affected by train disruption. The B 17 through Schwangau is fully closed until about 18 December 2026, so allow extra time and expect a diversion via Hohenschwangau.
Train: more freedom
The regional train RB 68 runs from Munich Hbf to Füssen, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours depending on the connection. A guide who travels with you handles tickets and connections. The line was interrupted several times in 2025 and 2026 by construction and an accident, so check live information on the day.
On your own by train
The Bayern-Ticket costs €34 for one person in 2026 and €10 more for each additional passenger, up to five people. It is valid from 9 am on weekdays and all day on weekends. See Munich to Neuschwanstein.
Time at the castle
Plan for roughly 3 to 4 hours including the climb and the 30-minute tour. The Ticket Center names the same range for a visit with Hohenschwangau. Ask how long the group stays in the village.
What to check before you book
Descriptions differ. These points decide whether a tour is good value.
Is admission included?
Look for "Neuschwanstein admission included". On "without tickets" offers, entrance is paid on site. Compare the total cost against the 2026 price of €21 for adults, as explained in our ticket guide.
Your entry time
The tour is built around a fixed entry time. Ask what time it is and whether you can change it. Late arrival means the ticket expires.
Shuttle and carriage
The shuttle bus (€3.50 up, €5 return) and the horse carriage (€8 up, €4 down) are normally paid separately. Both have no timetable. Walking up takes 30 to 40 minutes.
The Linderhof stop
Linderhof Palace costs €11 in 2026. The Venus Grotto is open only in the summer season, and the Moorish Kiosk cannot be visited because of renovation. In winter the palace closes at 4:30 pm.
Language and group size
The castle tours run in German and English. Audio guides in other languages exist only on specific audio-guided tours and in limited numbers.
Cancellation rules
The castle ticket itself cannot be cancelled when bought online. A tour package may have its own rules. Check them if the weather matters to you.
Tour or on your own?
The honest trade-offs.
Pros of a tour
One booking, no timetable, no ticket queue, a fixed meeting point and a guide for the way. A tour with admission is also an alternative when your date is sold out in the official shop.
Cons of a tour
The day is fixed, there is less time in the village, and you cannot start earlier or stay longer. The group follows the coach schedule, not your own pace.
Pros of going alone
You choose the entry time, the route and the mix with Hohenschwangau, the Alpsee or the Marienbrücke. Public transport is cheap.
Cons of going alone
You buy the timed ticket yourself, with a fee of €2.50 and no cancellation. You also deal with train disruption and long waits for shuttle and carriage.

Neuschwanstein tours: frequently asked questions
How long is a day tour from Munich?
Operators describe about 8 to 9.5 hours for Neuschwanstein alone and about 10 to 10.5 hours when Linderhof is added. The coach ride takes about two hours each way.
Is the castle ticket included in a tour?
It depends on the offer. Some tours include admission, others sell transport only, and you pay the entrance on site. Check for "admission included" and the entry time.
Do I still need a timed ticket when I book a tour?
Yes. The castle can be entered only on a guided tour at a fixed entry time. A tour either includes that ticket or expects you to have it.
Can I visit Neuschwanstein and Linderhof in one day?
Yes, with a combined coach tour or a private tour. Without a tour the connection by public transport is long, and the travel time from Munich to Linderhof is not officially confirmed.
Is a private tour worth it?
It helps families, small groups and visitors with special needs, since the start time and the pace are flexible. Check that admission and the entry time are part of the offer.
