Hohenschwangau: closest to the castles

Hohenschwangau is part of the municipality of Schwangau and sits directly below Hohenschwangau Castle and Neuschwanstein. The Ticket Center on Alpseestraße, the Museum of the Bavarian Kings and the Alpsee are all within walking distance. This is the best base if you have an early entry time, as the operator advises being in the village one and a half to two hours before your slot.

The tourism information for Hohenschwangau lists these places to stay: Hotel garni Schlossblick, Hotel Alpenstuben, Hotel Müller, Suitehotel Villa Ludwig and the AMERON Neuschwanstein Alpsee Resort & Spa. Holiday apartments are available at the Bullachberg. For meals in the village, the Dorfwirt and Restaurant Café Kainz are named.

There is no car access to the castles themselves, but you can park in Hohenschwangau. If your hotel has no parking, use the paid lots P1 to P4. Until about 18 December 2026 the B 17 in Schwangau is closed, so arrive via the diversion through Hohenschwangau.

Schwangau, Füssen and Pfronten

Each base has a different pace. The right one depends on how you travel.

Schwangau

The main village of the municipality lies roughly 2.7 to 4.8 km from Hohenschwangau, depending on where you measure. The Tegelberg cable car and the summer toboggan run are here, and bus 78 connects the village to the castles. Guests receive the Ostallgäu guest card, which gives a reduced castle ticket (€20 instead of €21).

Overnight guests receive the Füssen Card, which includes free rides on the "allgäumobil" bus network and reduced entry to several sights, including Neuschwanstein.

Pfronten

A village with a station at Pfronten-Steinach on the line towards Kempten. It has its own mountain railway, the Breitenbergbahn. We could not verify how far it is from the castles, so check the distance and your bus connection before booking.

Guest cards and what they give you

Many hosts in the region hand out guest cards on arrival, and they can offset some of the cost of the day.

  • Füssen Card: free local buses on the allgäumobil network (about 500 km), plus reduced entry to Neuschwanstein, the Museum of the Bavarian Kings, the Museum of the City of Füssen, the galleries in the High Palace and the Forggensee boat service.
  • KönigsCard: an extra card for the region (Füssen, the Ammergau Alps and the Tyrolean Außerfern) with more than 200 free services, for example mountain railways, pools and museums. It is only issued by taking part hosts.
  • Where they do not work: the KönigsCard and the SchwangauCard are not accepted on the shuttle bus to the Marienbrücke.

Ask your host which card you get before you arrive. For ticket rules and prices see our Neuschwanstein ticket guide.

Where to stay near Neuschwanstein: frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay in Füssen or Hohenschwangau?

Hohenschwangau puts you right at the Ticket Center and the start of the walk. Füssen has the railway station, the old town and more choice for evenings. Either way, plan to be in Hohenschwangau well before your entry time.

Can I do Neuschwanstein as a day trip from Munich instead?

Yes. The train takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours each way, and coach tours take 8 to 9.5 hours. An overnight stay gives you a relaxed morning, especially with an early entry slot.

Do I need a guest card?

It is not required, but the Füssen Card gives free local buses and reduced entry to several sights. Ask your host before you arrive.

Are there hotels at the castle itself?

No. The nearest places to stay are in Hohenschwangau village below the castles. You walk, take the shuttle or a carriage up.

How much do hotels cost?

Prices vary by season and day, so we give none. Check the current rates with the hotel or booking site.
